Finasteride and minoxidil are among the most studied treatments for male pattern hair loss. Most men who use them consistently keep more of their hair, and many see some regrowth.
Hair grows slowly. Most men notice less shedding within three months and visible improvement between six and twelve months.
Most men tolerate it well. A small percentage experience sexual side effects such as lower libido or erectile difficulty. These usually resolve after stopping but have been reported to persist in some men. Mood changes, including depression, have also been reported. Your physician will talk you through the risks.
Hair loss is progressive, so the benefits last as long as you continue treatment. If you stop, hair loss typically resumes over the following months.
Yes. Message your care team at any time and your physician can adjust your plan.
Finasteride can cause sexual side effects, which in some men have been reported to continue after stopping, and mood changes including depression and, rarely, thoughts of self-harm. Tell your physician right away if you notice changes in your mood. Finasteride also lowers PSA test results, so tell your doctor you take it before any prostate screening. Women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets. Minoxidil may cause scalp irritation, unwanted facial hair growth or, when taken orally, changes in heart rate or fluid retention.
